After his story was published in the Birmingham Evening Mail, Alfred Warren was sent a Postal Order for 1/- (5p) from a reader of the paper.
"A postal order for one shilling - and newspaper cutting and message - from some dear old grandmother, who troubled to send me some small portion of her pension.
I value that shilling greatly."
